Most energy consumers are receptive to the use of Smart Meters to monitor energy usage. IBM surveyed over 5,000 people in 12 countries and found that over 90 per cent were willing to use Smart Meters. "Newer and younger electricity consumers want more information so that they can manage their energy usage better, a 12-country study by consulting firm IBM has found. The survey of 5000 energy consumers in 12 developed countries, including New Zealand, found 90% wanted smart metering tools to monitor their energy use. The study concluded people are seeking information to make more educated and proactive decisions about energy use."
"Of the New Zealand consumers in the survey:
- 40% said they were willing to pay up to 5% more on their monthly bill for renewable power;
- 66% of New Zealanders aged 18-34 said they would like to be able to use a home computer to directly control their usage, electric devices, and total energy cost;
- Of all the age groups, the 35-54 year olds were the most interested in a service that evaluated and managed hourly energy usage.
IBM says the survey results suggest energy providers must leverage consumers' 'newfound openness to change, and then provide information, influence behaviour, and teach consumers new ways to meet their goals' (Source: NBR 13/03/09).
