Quick Tips

Switch off appliances at the wall instead of leaving them on standby and remember to turn off mobile phone chargers too when you’ve finished using them. Save around 5% off your energy bill.

Choose when you use your heated towel rail - instead of leaving it on continuously, use it for only a few hours per day.

Pull the plug on your second fridge – a larger fridge is more efficient than two fridges running at once.

Check your hot water temperature at the tap – it should be at 55oC. For every extra 10o higher, you are using 10% more electricity.

Make use of the sun – dry your laundry on the clothes line whenever possible instead of using a dryer. Keeping windows clean and free from overhanging trees is another way of taking advantage of sunlight to warm your home.

Rinse dishes under cold water instead of rinsing them under the hot tap.

Close the curtains just before dark to keep the heat in.

Use the right sized saucepan for the element when you're cooking, so heat doesn’t escape around the sides. And use a lid to keep the heat in.

Stop the drips – fix dripping hot taps by replacing the washer or fitting.

Turn off the hot water cylinder when going away for more than a week.

Dim lights and switch off when room is not in use.
